Examples of Hampshire Artists Donna Mcghie and Charlotte Rose's work

Pop along and see us during the Hampshire Open Studios Event

I am delighted to have been asked to partner up with Winchester based artist Charlotte Rose for this year’s Hampshire open Studios art trail event.

I always learn something from chatting with other artists, and thought it would be fun to do a mini interview with Charlotte about where she is on her artist’s journey, and how she got here:

Your paintings are very distinctive Charlotte, can you tell me what influences your work?

I’m a self taught landscape painter, but also a practising ecologist. I know all too well the pressures our natural world is under, as well as the beauty in it. I hope to raise awareness through my artwork.

Charlotte’s work definitely evokes a feeling of peace

That is so interesting. What effect would you like your work to have on people who view it and purchase it?

I try to immerse the viewer in the scene. Perhaps this triggers memories of similar places, or induces feelings of calm and tranquility.

I definitely feel calm when viewing your paintings. Is there a process to how you approach your work?

Charlotte likes to immerse her view in the scene

I have always been about colour in my work. But the last few years has seen me move away from a more impressionistic/realistic way of painting, to one that is more graphical.

I start by taking a scene that has something interesting or unusual that has caught my eye, but might not do to others.

I then work to break it down into component shapes and colour blocks. Starting from a sketch then building up on the canvas or paper.

It is a much longer process than my previous paintings, but I am pleased with how it is developing.

What are you hoping to achieve by taking part in Hampshire Open Studios?

I love to chat to people about the art and the environment. Often while I am painting, which I’ll be doing at this year’s Hampshire Open Art Studios event.

I am extremely excited to be opening my studio and welcoming you (Donna), and your wealth of creativity and passion.

I am so excited to be working alongside you also. Where else can people view your art work?

As well as this event, I am also project managing the Salisbury Art Trail. This runs through September, so if people don’t manage to pop into my studio, there will be further opportunities to see my work in that other Cathedral City.

Thank you so much for having this little chat Charlotte, I look forward to working alongside you during Hampshire Open Art Studios.

Both Charlotte and myself would love to see you at her studio. We are number 139 in the Hampshire Open Studios leaflet so please do pop along for a chat and a cuppa.
